ALBANY — The State University of New York’s Board of Trustees signed off Thursday on giving SUNY Stony Brook’s new president a $695,000 salary.

Dr. Maurie McInnis, currently vice president and provost at the University of Texas at Austin, will start July 1.

Her predecessor Samuel Stanley Jr. stepped down in July 2019, leaving behind a $729,453 salary.

“SUNY is highly competitive and cost effective when compared with any state system of public higher education. Our students, faculty, and surrounding communities demand excellent leaders who add to a top rated academic experience, and provide comprehensive medical care and resources for the communities we serve,” said SUNY spokeswoman Holly Liapis, defending the salary.

McInnis made $523,000 at the University of Texas, according to 2019 salary data from that state published by the Texas Tribune.

SUNY officials typically rank among the best compensated on the state’s payrolls.

The Stony Brook campus’s dormitories are being converted into a makeshift emergency hospital space to help treat coronavirus patients, which forced officials to boot students out of their dorms for the remainder of the spring semester.

It’s part of Cuomo’s plan to increase the state’s hospital bed capacity from 53,000 to 110,000 beds as the statewide disease count continues to rise.
