Mike Francesa called the Mets “dummies” for announcing Tuesday that star pitcher Noah Syndergaard would undergo Tommy John surgery this week to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

Many on social media were angered that Syndergaard would be undergoing the surgery, which has almost become a routine procedure for pitchers, in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, as several states have banned nonessential or elective surgery in order to better prepare hospitals for the influx of patients testing positive for the virus.

In Florida, where the surgery is taking place an hour from the Mets’ since-closed spring training facility, doctors are responsible for determining what is an essential surgery, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The Mets were told the surgery met the criteria of an essential surgery, The Post previously reported.

Not everyone thought that should be the case.

“You’re going to get people furious, and they are,” Francesa said Tuesday while on the WFAN airwaves. “They’re going crazy everywhere. ‘How does he get elective surgery? I thought the hospitals closed elective surgery’ … And you know what? They’re right. The people are right.”

Francesa, who is set to pick up more airtime with sports on hiatus due to the virus outbreak, suggested the Mets should have went about the surgery without alerting the masses.

“Don’t rub it in their face,” Francesa said. “Shut up and give him the surgery and don’t say a word about it. Let people guess when he got the surgery, and two weeks from now you can say he already had the surgery.”

Francesa added, “You do not then announce that your big star baseball player is having elective surgery on Thursday, you dummies!”

It typically takes 14-15 months to rehab from Tommy John surgery, meaning Syndergaard likely won’t be ready to pitch for the Mets until June 2021, at the earliest.

It is unclear whether waiting for the surgery to be done at a later time would negatively impact the 27-year-old’s Syndergaard’s health moving forward. It could, however, affect his ability to cash in on free agency following the 2021 season.

Every case is different, though, as Los Angeles Angels’ two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani delayed Tommy John surgery in 2018 so that he could continue to hit while his pitching elbow healed.

Ohtani, 25, still is considered one of the game’s biggest stars and is expected to return to the mound whenever the 2020 season — originally scheduled to open Thursday — begins.
