With the coronavirus pandemic temporarily shuttering salons across the country, those who used to outsource beauty treatments are having to take matters into their own two hands — even celebrities.

“I’m not doing house calls,” Hollywood hair colorist Michael Canalé, who counts Jennifer Aniston, Heidi Klum, Shakira and Penélope Cruz as just a few of his A-list clients, told Page Six Style.

“We’re mailing out their exact formulas so they can actually do touch-ups at home. We’re giving them enough to do the part and around the hairline.”

The hair whiz, who estimated that “probably 30” of his top clients have requested home kits “to get them through,” added that the process will probably be easier for VIPs who are coupled up or crashing with friends.

“It’s a messy project,” he admitted. “So if they can get a friend or a partner to help, that’d be best. I’ve had the same clients forever, though, so they all know what I do, and we are giving them directions.” (Aniston, for instance, has been seeing Canalé for over two decades.)

For the rest of us mere mortals, the beauty pro says boxed dye from the drugstore is perfectly fine, as long as you buy the right kind.

“Use semi-permanent for the time being, until the salons are open again. Get rid of the gray, play around with some red tones, have some fun with it knowing it’s not permanent,” he told us. “That way, your salon will be able to just pick up where they left off.”

And when choosing a shade, opt for “a natural base color,” Canalé added.

“You’re just tinting it a bit; it’s not going to be like going to the salon. You also want to go two shades lighter around the hairline, which naturally picks up color [differently]. So if you’re doing light brown, you’d do dark blond around the hairline.”

Speaking of hairlines, a touch-up in that area may be all that’s needed for the weeks of video conference calls ahead. “If your hairline’s gray, you can just do the front. You’re not leaving the house or anything — you’re really just looking at yourself!” he said with a laugh.

For those eager to conceal their roots but hesitant to try boxed dye, there are plenty of quick — albeit more temporary — fixes.

“Oribe Airbrush Root Touch-Up Spray ($32) is good for covering grays in the part and around the face,” Canalé said. He also recommends Color Wow Root Cover-Up ($34.50), which allows for more precise application.

And since many millions of people are staying home to practice social distancing, the colorist pointed out that now is an ideal time to give your tresses some extra TLC.

“Add oils, like argan, to your conditioner,” he advised. “If you’re using a tablespoon of conditioner, put three to five drops of oil in it. Or you can do a hot oil treatment and let it sit for three or four hours, using 10 to 20 drops of oil for each tablespoon of conditioner.”

It’s also a good time to use a shine-boosting gloss. Canalé’s own glosses, which promise to last up to 20 shampoos, drop in June and can currently be pre-ordered for $49.

Ultimately, Canalé said, the goal is to keep your hair conditioned and healthy while maintaining your color, not changing it completely just because you’re bored.

“You can play around, but don’t get crazy,” he warned. “The last thing you want to do is ruin your hair while you’re stuck in the house.”
